    Much better. This is the ship’s bold CAPTAIN. She is a pretty easygoing sort of person, but her laissez-faire attitude does not extend to a tolerance of being beaten over the head and thrown into cupboards. Poker night has gotten a bit unruly before, but whoever pulled this shit is going out the airlock.

    Okay so… hijacking. Uniforms, guns, some sort of professional outfit. What a pain. Mop vs gun is not exactly fair.

    Poor bastard didn’t stand a chance. Probably best to figure out what’s going on now and take back the ship! Question is… where should we start? It’s a big ship!

    Tell me where our captain should go! And what her name is! And, for that matter, what the dang ship is called!

    This is Captain Hoist Petard, fearless skipper of the U.F.P. After the First Wild Urgencies of Youth.  And she was just about to STRIP and LOOT the BODY, pocket those CORROSIVE CLEANING SUPPLIES from the shelf, WEAR the dead guy’s ARMOR, and leave the cupboard armed with the MOP.

    "Pyro is voiced by the same actor who does Spy, giving the game’s dramatis personae an interesting Captain Hook/Mr. Darling interior dynamic (in Peter Pan, the same actor traditionally portrays both Captain Hook and Wendy’s father, Mr. Darling, which highlights the pubescent female psychosexual drama in Wendy’s choice between joining the pirates and a Humbertesque father-lover, or going home to her real family). The Pyro is the Spy’s “hard counter”, meaning a class designed specifically to counter the abilities of another. Pyro’s wide swaths of flame can catch Spies who are using their class-based abilities, invisibility (“cloaking”), and disguising as enemy teammembers. This physically harms the Spies, but also blows their cover, as the flames are quite visible even when the Spy is not. They are the only two masked characters, and the only two characters who carry open flame—Spy’s in the form of his mascot, the daemon-like cigarette, a miniaturized faux-flamethrower, which trails him with a thread of smoke wherever he runs. Could the Spy have flame-envy?"

    "As an online multiplayer-only, plotless, mindlessly-violent first-person-shooter, I had assumed that the female fanbase would be limited; confined mostly to diehard first-person-shooter (FPS) enthusiasts, a subset of games with few female devotees. Fewer in number than female WoW players, or Harry Potter readers, certainly. Despite this, the vast majority of the TF2 fanart posters—and artists—seemed to be women. Weirder still, not all of them even played the game, and very few of them played the game regularly. This was stunning. It was as if I had happened upon a cargo cult—imagine someone showing up to a Star Trek convention with exquisite Spock fan art and a beautiful costume, having never watched the show."

    I have started a game blog.  I told you I’d do it, but you didn’t believe me.

    My first post is in two parts, and will be expanded to three or four in the following weeks.  The topic is one I’ve been studying for over a year: the Team Fortress 2 fandom, and its significance as feminist aesthetic.  I’ve started with an introduction, and moved onto an examination of the Pyro.  Future chapters will deal with specific classes, and the way in which fan artists and writers appropriate and repurpose Valve’s franchise canon, while constructing their own.

    "Gamers get hella uncomfortable over male sexuality too. Can you imagine a “good male character who just happens to be wearing sexually exploitative outfits because he’s ok with his masculinity?” Constantly has the camera pan lovingly over his asscrack and firm glutes, and big ole dangly ballsack that is totes sweaty from all this MMA and soldiering. Time to hit the showers, and do you, personally, think it’s ok to have a long slow pan up the dude’s package (indiscreetly hidden in a jock of course), to his chiseled physique and erect nipples (pierced). He’s not even a Bond-esque confident man, he’s basically a weird Bowie caricature that’s constantly having near-dickslips in every single cinematic as the completely nonsexualized female characters do their business of being gruff and shooting dudes and advancing the plot. Finally, at the end he falls in love (out of nowhere) and/or is killed by the big baddie."

    The interstitial splash screens in the Secret of Monkey Island were my first exposure to truly beautiful game art, and probably were directly responsible for the rest of my life.  I regret that Monkey Island II didn’t have screens like this.
